ssignment 4 Literature Review Recidivism Therapy Research Recidivism therapy research can be a very effective tool, in the combat of lowering rates of recidivism. The focus in cognitive functioning of prisoners can be a very useful in the way we treat repeat offenders. Research shows that changing the way people think about certain behaviors, while providing them with support systems lowers the risk of recidivism rates. We especially see this in the rates of young offenders. Which is the group we primarily want to treat, as we do not want them growing up into adult offenders. It is most often that â€Å" offenders who fail to participate in or complete treatment programs return to their communities with an unchanged behavior (Bosma,†¦show more content†¦Cognitive therapy shows an improvement in almost every case study. Leading convicts to make better decisions, have more confidence, and take charge of their life. Inmates who also take part in this program are giv en eduction and training during their prison term. This is a primary factor in the treatment of cognitive therapy, as a persons thoughts to commit crime are often based off of a person experience, and behavior is shaped and influenced by these experiences. If we can change the expectations and experiences a person has in a community by providing them and education and a chance at a better social class we can see improvement in a persons need to commit crime. Many studies have reported that â€Å" prisoners who have upskilled over time are less like to commit more serious offenses over time (Giles 2016 p. 214). The efficiency of upskilling in mental health improvements is seen well after treatment in concluded, increases in confidence, self motivation and initiative are evident months later. While mental health is not the only factor that can influence recidivism rates, it is one of the most prominate. The presence of mental health disorders are down played in the criminal justice system.
